Edmonton Market Highlights

Edmonton is the centre of Alberta’s boom economy. The Capital of the Province and known as Alberta’s “Festival City”, Edmonton is home to more than one million people. Edmonton is the supply base for Alberta’s ever expanding petroleum industry - the industrial supplier to the tar sands, supply depot to the growing Northern Alberta population, and the administrative hub for Northern Alberta and Northern Canada.

Demographics


  • Compared against the other 33 CMAs, Edmonton had the second lowest proportion of senior citizens and a median age of 36.4 years
  • The youthful population has been maintained by an increased amount of interprovincial migration, increasing the share of individuals between the ages of 20-44


Investment


  • Over $200 billion in regional investment is planned for the next decade


GDP


  • Annual GDP of more than $42.5 billion
  • Robust GDP growth of 47% in the past decade, exceeding Canadian growth in eight of the past 10 years
  • Projected GDP growth of approximately 3% over the next five years


Workforce


  • Edmonton’s educated entrepreneurial workforce has grown 5.5% since the fall of 2006 reaching 632,000
  • In 2006, Greater Edmonton had an estimated net increase of 19,000 migrants, of which 60% were from other provinces


Income


  • The Conference Board of Canada estimates Edmonton’s personal income per capita in 2007 to have been $42,609, 20% higher than the Canadian average and higher than major Canadian cities such as Montreal, Toronto, Ottawa and Vancouver
